A Gold Coast icon: Surfers Paradise Meter Maids
While walking on the streets and spending your holiday at Surfers Paradise, it might happen that you get distracted by pretty women in gold two piece swim suits and Australian akubra hats. They are called Meter Maids, a very popular scene on the streets of Surfers Paradise.
Just a few meters away from Chevron Towers Resort, you can spot these Meter Maids and have a picture with them. According to locals, the Meter Maids of Surfers Paradise started more than four decades ago. The job of these Meter Maids was originally to walk on the streets and insert coins on the expired parking meters so that tourists will no longer worry about having parking penalties. Although there were issues about it, the Meter Maids still became a hit to the tourists as well as the locals of Surfers Paradise. Instead of the akubra hats, Meter Maids used to wear tiaras.
Nowadays, Surfers Paradise Meter Maids are no longer inserting coins on the parking meters since the old parking meters were replaced with the newer voucher-dispensing parking technology. It was not the end for the Meter Maids in gold bikinis. They are now paid by businesses in Surfers Paradise for their promotional job that creates a positive outcome to the tourism of the Gold Coast.
Aside from these, the Meter Maids are also friendly and talented performers. They also engage in charity projects and involve in endorsing awareness to the tourists about safety tips on swimming and surfing.
Although their previous work is over, the Meter Maids are an icon of the Gold Coast and surely be here to stay for the years to come. When you book at Chevron Towers Resort, you will surely spot these beautiful ladies while you are exploring Surfers Paradise.
