Surfers Paradise enters the “Queensland Beach Challenge”
I am glad to hear that they are having the most competitive program ever developed in order to keep Queensland’s beaches free from litter – the Queensland Beach Challenge. Through the partnership of both local governments and their communities, I realized that they work together as they manage the environment of the beaches while having fun.
Every year, over a hundred of beaches enter this competition. Starting from right along the Queensland coast of South Coolangatta, Gold Coast, into Torres Strait and right up to the Gulf of Carpentaria, the most popular activity is the visiting and judging of each one.
This competition is still running since it was launched in 1998. The main aim of the competition is to challenge the communities who are residing in Queensland’s coastal communities to prove that they have the cleanest beach in the entire state.
Criteria for judging:
As each beach aims for the title of Queensland’s Cleanest Beach, a beach community is expected to be clean and also to take a very strong proactive stance. This will evidently show that they demonstrate all the aspects of the Clean Beach Challenge.
Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland judges are looking into every beach’s community where they include the beach’s geographic, environmental, cultural and economic circumstances. They would evaluate whether or not they effectively and efficiently make use of their resources. Included in the criteria are litter prevention, resource management, environmental protection, youth initiatives, visitor friendliness and partnerships in community and action.
In the year 2006, Surfers Paradise along with some other beaches won different categories in the competition. This was due to the fact that they were able to use the spirit of cooperation while pursuing the challenge of competition. They have lessened vandalism through high youth participation and helped repair and preserve the environment. They organized and promote public awareness and education about climate change and sustainability. Moreover, they were able to maintain pleasant and attractive beaches while protecting the environment.
Surfers Paradise is one of those who increased civic pride while improving Queenslander’s health. They have promoted tourism by maintaining attractive and pleasant beaches. One of their main concerns is really to prevent litter. Surfers Paradise won the “Do the Right Thing Litter Prevention” which is sponsored by the Packaging Stewardship Forum Award.
Let’s see if they can win it again this year!
